Nick Boyer began playing touch rugby at his dad's rugby games and eventually started his own team in middle school. In high school, he also played football at the freshman and junior varsity levels; along with three years of wrestling which include two at the varsity level.

During his collegiate career at Cal University, Boyer played both 7s and 15s winning the Varsity Cup and Collegiate Rugby Championship. He was also a USA Rugby Junior and Collegiate All-American in 15s and was a part of the USA U20s team who won the 2012 World Rugby Trophy.

In 2016, Boyer competed with the Men's Selects (15s) at the developmental Americas Pacific Challenge and finally earned a spot in the senior Men's Eagles Sevens residency program. From there, he officially made his debut at the HSBC Hamilton Sevens 2018 and earned his first cap in 15s that November during the Men's Eagles Autumn Internationals against Romania.
