Men's Eagles Sevens fall to France in HSBC Canada Sevens Cup Semifinals

VANCOUVER, B.C. - The Men's Eagles Sevens run of Cup Final appearances has come to an end. In the Cup Semifinals of HSBC Canada Sevens, the United States fell to an incredibly sharp French team who scored 33 unanswered points before the USA notched a try on the final play.

It wasn't the best rugby they'd played in a tournament where the USA were tested in every game they entered.

An early penalty against the United States gave France an opening to run the first try of the game all the way within minutes. Then, as the French defense managed its spacing incredibly well, the Eagles Sevens were pushed further and further back until France made a tackle inside the U.S. try zone, stole the ball and dotted down.

With the restart, France was at it again moving through a gap to score their next try mid posts, 0-19.

As momentum remained latched to the opposing side, the USA found it tricky to catch a break. On the final play of the half, a strong run by Brett Thompson was pushed to touch by French defenders and both teams were sent to the half.

Where the United States came back to score three tries and defeat England in the previous game, the second-half against France failed to yield the same rewards.

France converted two more USA mistakes to tries by intercepting an offload and scooping up a messy recycle at the breakdown, 0-33. Despite many attacking threats, the Eagles Sevens simply couldn't catch a break against the tight French coverage.

On the final play, Marcus Tupuola broke free from a USA lineout and ran along the edge to end the shutout 5-33.

The Men's Eagles Sevens are understandably hurt by the loss but still remain to fight for a medal in the Bronze Final. 2016 Olympic Champions Fiji will be up next as the United States hunts for the remaining points on offer at HSBC Canada Sevens.

The match kicks off at 8:52 PM ET, LIVE on
