USA Men's Sevens book their ticket to Paris Cup Quarterfinals with win over Samoa

PARIS, FRA. - The Men's Eagles Sevens were hit hard in the opening minutes when an injury to Folau Niua put the playmaker out for the rest of HSBC Paris Sevens. Having overcome injury all season, the United States once again looked to the depth in their playing group to churn out a 33-14 victory over Samoa in the second match of Pool C.

Following Niua's injury -- which happened with the U.S. right near the goal line -- Samoa broke open on the wing and scored. But with the next attack, Captain Madison Hughes snagged the ball from the breakdown and ran through a gap to tip momentum right back in his side's favor.

After back to back penalties against the Samoans, the United States employed brilliant execution in attack to keep the ball alive and help Martin Iosefo dot down in the corner. The epic speedster Carlin Isles added his 50th try of the season next and the Eagles Sevens were up 19-7.

Another penalty against Samoa gave the U.S. a lineout just outside the 22 where Captain Madison Hughes employed a deceptive dummy and Marcus Tupuola drove in his second try of the day mid posts. With USA up 26-7, the Samoans worked a man open on the edge and drove in their second try with two minutes remaining, 26-14.

The Samoan try was answered immediately by USA's Perry Baker who launched a massive clean break to run right down the stretch and end the match at 33-14.

Now with their second win of the day, having already beaten Spain in the first match of Pool C, the United States have booked their ticket to the Cup Quarterfinals and need only to face rival-Canada to determine their placing.
