USA Men's Sevens claim hard-fought win over France to open HSBC Sydney Sevens

SYDNEY, AUS. - The Men's Eagles Sevens collected the very definition of a hard-fought win in the opening match of HSBC Sydney Sevens 2019 against France. After penalties dominated the game on both sides, and the French defense kept close cover an all USA ballcarriers, the Americans finally found space in the 11th minute to score the only try.

Three consecutive penalties were committed by the United States on the first French attack, despite the opposition having a difficult time moving past the halfway line.

France committed a number of penalties themselves and was equally challenged by an Eagles Sevens defense that tightly matched any gaps of space.

Six minutes in and with no score, the Americans were well aware that their best chance at a try would be to work the edges of the pitch. But even with speed demon Carlin Isles on the outside, the USA was hounded by French defenders.

When play resumed, the United States was redeemed with a lineout just outside the 22 and used the positioning to get Isles right back on the edge for a classic sneakaway score. But France was onto Isles just the same and after a few phases of passing, the Eagles Sevens star got the ball back into position and just barely lost control as his hand reached over the line for the dot down. No try.

Deceived, disappointed but all the more hungry to claim the win, the United States finally made magic on the next attack.

A tiny pass from Isles to Kevon Williams was perfectly timed for Williams to quickly run the ball up the middle where Captain Madison Hughes converted, 7-0.

The USA tried to score another before the final play of the match but momentum had run stagnant with back and forth knock ons.

As time expired, Captain Madison Hughes immediately kicked the ball to touch and the United States solidified their first win of the day.
