Women's Sevens collect first win at HSBC USA Women Sevens

GLENDALE, CO - The 2019 Women's Sevens notched their first win of the new season in a 24-21 victory over China after a continued shining performance from rising star, Ilona Maher. In a fireworks filled second half from both teams, the United States was able to hold on to the win and bring their record to 1-1. With Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018 champion New Zealand on the horizon, the Eagles will need the positive momentum.

Alev Kelter kicked off with a knock-on to follow, giving the US an immediate striking opportunity. The Chinese defense held the line however and pushed the ball toward mid-field. A crucial tackle from Kelter would force another fumbled knock on and feed Abby Gustaitis for the opening score. USA leads early, 7-0.

China would turn the pressure around soon after as the USA found themselves on defense for the majority of the first half. Hongting Ruan capitalized on field position and drove in a try to knot it up at seven a side at halftime.

Match one highlight reel Ilona Maher sprinted right back into form with a pair of tries, the first coming immediately off the second half restart. A yellow card from Kelter soon after allowed the player-advantage in China's favor, leading to another try and cutting the US lead to three, 17-14. Back in the mix, Kelter would make good and dash away for a try of her own, providing the dagger on a 24-21 win.

With the altitude becoming a factor through two matches, the US and New Zealand will head into a crucial recovery break before their marquee match up at 5:04pmMT. Catch the match LIVE on FloRugby.
