Spain's Garcia sneaks away with win over Women's Sevens in 5th place semi

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - The Women's Sevens have played determined rugby so far in Sydney, with similar timelines each go around. Start off slow, re-engage after half, fall just short of a comeback when the final whistle blows. The story played out again during the 24-19 5th place playoff again Spain. Moreover, the Spanish Captain, Patricia Garcia, who on four separate occasions was able to tap-and-go from the scrum or penalty, leading to points.

Defensively, the United States have their kinks to work out, yet the 1 - 2 - 3 from Rogers, Kelter and Tapper continues to be a turn keep try machine for the United States. Ryan Carlyle however was a welcome change of pace as she turned in two tries of her own. The second coming off a Spain line out where she anticipated the over throw. With three minutes left, the US was an unconverted try away from tying the game.

Cue Naya Tapper.

#7 would come off the bench as fresh legs this time around, and put that to good use as she again opened up for Kelter and dragged two defenders to the try line. Eventually brought to the ground a few cementers shy of the pay dirt, Tapper simply reached around her back to dot down over the line. Brilliantly, the US reset with a 19-19 tie game and momentum.

Patricia Garcia would however revert back to her quick tap out of penalty and seal the victory after time had expired.

Head Coach Richie Walker urged his team to, ""Be aggressive in contact, and you've got to want it" and will carry that sentiment into tomorrows final match. With the Women's Sevens currently in 2nd place on the series after a strong Dubai, the 8 points available should be well coveted.
