Men's Sevens onto SV7s semifinal after defensive showing against Fiji

SAN JOSE, CA - The Men's Eagles Sevens walked out in welcomed warmer weather at Avaya Stadium this afternoon, holding the second seed in Silicon Valley Sevens knock-out rounds. Facing a Fijian team they had not seen this tournament, the United States defense steped up, holing the opposition to only 5 points in a 24-5 win.

Initial points came from a well timed rainbow pass to the corner from Niua to Kevon Williams. Seemingly a quarterback like pass, the US supporters were on their feet early after the exciting try. Niua would again set up a score moments later after a laser kick through the Fijian line where Martin Iosefo ran down the ball, picked up a friendly bounce, and strolled into the try zone.

The only hiccup seemingly from the US defense came just before half, when Netani Vakyalia broke away behind the line, peering back at a surprised group of Eagles.

Captain Ben Pinkelman said post match, "We need to get better with our one-on-one tackles. If we can do that, we'll be pretty hard to beat." Pinkelman's comments reflect that of Head Coach Mike Friday after Pool play yesterday. With a strong team like Fiji held to only 5 points, the Eagles may be doing just that.

Next up the United States will clash with England who held Samoa to a 25-10 victory.
