UPDATE | December 8

The final score of the Men's Eagles Sevens' Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens Challenge Trophy Quarterfinal defeat of Russia was incorrectly reported as 40-5. In the build-up to Kevin Akuabu's dot-down in-goal after stadium time had expired, Russia lost possession forward, nullifying the try. The match ended at 40-0 in favor of the U.S.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - The Men's Eagles Sevens ran in six tries against Russia in their 40-5 victory in the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens Challenge Trophy Quarterfinal Saturday.

The U.S. saw its hopes for a shutout dashed two minutes after the in-stadium horn had sounded, but limited Russia to just two legitimate scoring opportunities in the win. The Eagles advance to the Challenge Trophy Semifinal against Kenya Saturday at 5:44 a.m. ET. Supporters can watch Dubai Sevens on World Rugby's Sevens Series website.

The Eagles equaled South Africa's try-scoring output in their final matchup in Pool B Friday yet fell short in a two-point loss, dropping to the lower bracket in the first tournament of the 2016-17 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. Not wanting to head to the next stop without something to show for their efforts, the Eagles took control of the Quarterfinal from the opening restart.

Martin Iosefo backed up Danny Barrett on the restart win and began a three-pass sequence that found Perry Baker not far from the middle of the field. He rounded the last defender at midfield and beat the chasers for a 7-0 lead less than a minute into the match.

A breakdown poach from captain Madison Hughes in the third minute started another successful Eagles attack, with Baker again causing problems for Russia along the touch line before Andrew Durutalo supported the speedster for the 12-0 advantage.

Hughes' skill with the boot was on display on several occasions during the XVs national team's November Tour in Europe last month. From the fifth-minute restart against Russia, he did the same thing, dribbling the ball down to the five-meter line and jumping on it with two defenders hassling him. The Eagles pushed up and it did not take long for Iosefo to take a tackler over the line.

Baker and Durutalo combined on the ensuing restart to extend the lead to 26-0, with Durutalo picking the ball Baker had tipped out of the air and Baker grabbing the ball from the breakdown for the try. Russia got out of its own half in the dying moments of the first frame and made it as far as the U.S. 22 before the halftime whistle blew.

Maka Unufe was inserted at halftime and won the second-half restart, which was turned into points when Niua sent a high kick into the corner of the try zone for Hughes to dot down in-goal, 33-0. Russia's lengthy attack in the 11th minute tested the Eagles' lung capacities, but ultimately fell flat to handling errors. Don Pati scored his first career try a minute later, dummying through the gain line at his own 10 and sprinting to the try zone.

Several penalties called against the Eagles after time had expired allowed Russia the time to put together its only scoring drive of the game, with Kevin Akuabu dotting down in the corner for the 40-5 final score.

Kenya defeated Canada in an earlier Quarterfinal and will face the Eagles in the Semifinal at 5:44 a.m. ET. Dubai Sevens can be seen live on World Rugby's Sevens Series website.
