USA Men’s Sevens win bronze medal at Pan American Games Lima 2019

Pan American Games Lima 2019 Day Three recap

The USA Men’s National Team 7s have won a bronze medal at the Pan American Games 2019 in Lima, Peru. Following a frustrating loss to Argentina in the Semifinals, the USA men came back to push Brazil into extra time before a thrilling contest in sudden death led to the victory.

SEMIFINAL | UNITED STATES 7

An experienced Argentinian side delivered a polished performance against the USA Men’s Sevens in the Semifinal. Winning the battle with physicality and one too many U.S. errors, the Argentinians turned a 14-0 lead into a 7-31 result despite an impressive try by Travion Clark to rally some momentum.

In the end, Argentina used every penalty against the United States to their advantage, monopolizing space and possession to restrict the Eagles Sevens from building an attack. And while it wasn’t the best performance by the USA men, the loss was a sting that carried into the Bronze medal game where the group found its resilience.

BRONZE MEDAL MATCH | UNITED STATES 24

The first few minutes of the Bronze Medal Match were choppy until the USA’s Harley Wheeler made a clean break into the try zone and Brazil found gas to score two of their own, 7-14. A contentious battle from start to finish intensified when D’Montae Noble drew a yellow card for a dangerous tackle and Brazil used the space to add another try in their favor.

Then up 7-19, the Brazilian side cruised comfortably, assuming that only a few more minutes of holding off the U.S. would surely lead to a win. But the Eagles Sevens didn’t give up that easily. Harley Wheeler and Travion Clark added back-to-back tries to level the score at 19 all, after which a thrilling final minute and period of sudden death ensued.

With the U.S. into the 22, Brazil continued to commit penalties, allowing pressure to get the best of them though the Eagles Sevens still hadn’t made it into the try zone. Captain Cody Melphy attempted a drop kick on one final Brazilian penalty but the ball fell by the wayside and the opposition were back on attack.

Lucky enough, Brazil knocked it on twice and the U.S. managed to get Travion Clark over the line before a knock on by Clark put both teams in sudden death. There, the Brazilians and Americans fought for the full duration of time until Marcus Tupuola made a heroic run through tight space to sail across the line mid posts and give the Eagles Sevens a victory.

The win marks the second consecutive bronze medal for the USA men at the Pan American Games.
