Falcons Depart Punta del Este for Second Leg of Sudamérica Sevens in Chile

Men's Falcons will have an opportunity to improve in Viña Del Mar on Saturday

PUNTA DEL ESTE, URU. – A challenging weekend in Punta del Este saw the Men’s Falcons finish the first leg of the 2018 Sudamérica Rugby Sevens tournament in 10th place. After dropping to Uruguay (12-21), France (29-5) and Brazil (29-5) in pool play, a 31-26 victory over Canada took the Falcons to the Cup of Honor match where they eventually fell to Colombia 21-5.

The United States will have a chance to improve on the weekend’s result during the second part of the tournament in Viña del Mar, Chile from Jan. 13-14, where they drew in Pool C with France, Uruguay and Colombia. Though matches will not be broadcast live in the U.S., updates will be available by following @USARugby on Twitter.

Head Coach JD Stephenson and his squad will spend the beginning of this week in Montevideo, Uruguay with a rigorous training schedule to prepare for the upcoming weekend. And, though their first stint in the tournament was hard-fought, the experience for a group of developing players proved to be invaluable.

“This tour provides a valuable learning experience and launching platform for our future Eagles, while ensuring that we are aligned with the structures that Mike [Friday] and his staff have put in place to allow for a seamless transition,” said Head Coach Stephenson. “Although the match results aren’t ideal, the playing and coaching group grew from the experience in Punta del Este and we are excited to put in a good week of training and a better team performance in Viña del Mar.”

“It’s always challenging arriving two days before playing, especially given the high quality of play and steep learning curb for players in their first 7s tour,” said Coach Stephenson, describing his squad’s challenges on and off the field of play.

The Falcons will begin the final phase of Sudamérica Sevens on Saturday, Jan. 13 with matches against France (11:00 AM ET) Uruguay (2:00 PM ET) and Colombia (5:40 PM ET) on Day One. Though a broadcast is not available in the United States, updates will be available by following @USARugby on Twitter.

“Our focus as a collective group will be our ruck defense and role clarity around our alignment in both attack and defense which gave away triggers to the opposition this weekend,” says Coach Stephenson. “We would also like to possess a better understanding of our patterns of play against the different defensive pictures presented and make the most of our opportunities.”
