Fall College Playoffs to peak in Greenville, S.C.

LAFAYETTE, Colo. – USA Rugby announced Friday the playoff locations and venues for the fall portion of the 2016-17 College Rugby season, including the Women’s Division I and II and Men’s D1AA Fall Championship playoffs and Men’s Division II National Championship playoffs.

The Eastern Kentucky University campus and Wayne State University’s Wayne Rugby Fields will host their first USA Rugby Championship events next month, while John Roberts Field at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., will again be home to a Championship weekend of rugby Dec. 3-4. In all, 48 men’s and women’s collegiate rugby teams will travel to seven venues stretching from Cincinnati as far east as the campus of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

“Each year we aim to take our Championships to new locales across the country in order to include as much of the community as we can,” said USA Rugby College Director Rich Cortez. “That way we can build on those relationships and expand our events, evidenced by the professional and well-run Championships we’ve had at Furman University the past few years.

Kicking off with if-necessary play-in rounds the weekend of Nov. 12 at higher-ranked seeds, the regional rounds of the Women’s DI and DII Fall Championship playoffs begin the weekend of Nov. 19-20 in four locations. The East DI Quarterfinals and Semifinals will be held at Vassar, with the Northeast DII Round of 16 and Quarterfinals also splitting the school’s Vassar College Farm and Prentiss Sports Complex facilities. Cincinnati Rugby Football Club’s Brimelow Fields will also see eight teams competing over the weekend with the West DI and Mid-West DII Regionals taking place in Ohio. Playoff-bound Mid-Atlantic teams in DII will not have to travel far for their opening round at Kutztown University, while the West teams get to open Wayne State’s Championship-hosting account.

Winners from the DII Regionals will meet at Furman for a doubleheader weekend, with two Semifinal matches and a Fall Championship Final scheduled. The DI victors will only play in their Fall Championship matchup in Greenville.

Home field of Pittsburgh Harlequins Rugby Club, Founders Field has a running streak of more than five consecutive years of hosting USA Rugby Championship events. Four separate pools of regional collegiate playoff rugby graced the facility in 2015, with the most recent playoff action coming from the club game in 2016. The East Quarterfinals and Semifinals of the D1AA Fall Championship will be held there, as well as the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast pools of the DII National Championship Round of 16 and Quarterfinals.

DII’s West Regionals join their Women’s DII counterparts in Nebraska at Wayne Rugby Fields, while Furman University will prepare its campus for the Championship weekend by hosting the South Regionals.

D1AA’s West Regionals head to Eastern Kentucky University before the Semifinal winner from that pool and the East pool meet in South Carolina for the Fall Championship.

Eight matches will be played at John Roberts Field Dec. 3-4, including the consolation matches of the Women’s DII Fall Championship and Men’s DII National Championship brackets.
