AIG WCAA team selected for matches against Maple Leafs

SALT LAKE CITY – USA Rugby AIG Women’s Collegiate All-Americans Head Coach Sue Whitwell has selected 26 athletes from the recent Junior and Collegiate Stars and Stripes Camp for a two-match series with Rugby Canada’s Maple Leafs this week.

All-American veterans Nicole Benedetti and Bailey Johnson highlight a young under-23 roster alongside the likes of 1997-born McKenzie Hawkins, Azniv Nalbandian, and Kat Ramage. With a player pool of more than 90 female athletes in camp at University of Utah for the past week playing with and against each other, Whitwell and the All-American coaching staff, including AIG Women’s Junior All-Americans Head Coach Wil Snape, were able to see players in high-pressure situations on and off the field prior to selecting the touring side.

Hawkins, Nalbandian, and Ramage join seven other teammates from last year’s WJAAs as graduates to the under-23 program. Gabriella Cantorna, Lanoira Duhart, Frieda Fetu’u, Tess Feury, Danielle Ordway, and Tayla Pipkin were also members of Snape’s WJAAs that defeat an under-20 Canadian side twice in two matches on the campus of Central Washington University.

The WCAAs’ July 5 and July 9 matches will be against a senior developmental team rather than an age-grade representative, with the matches opening the second and third match days of the Women’s Rugby Super Series. All matches from Regional Athletic Complex will be broadcast live to subscribers of The Rugby Channel on USA Rugby’s YouTube page.
